intervention, Grassi Ethnographical Museum

In the context of the exhibition "Fremd" the ethnological museum in Leipzig invited several artists to intervene in their permanent exhibition. On this occasion, for "FRISCHER WIND" („Fresh Breeze“) 16 ventilators were installed within the exhibition rooms.
Climate is an essential as well as fragile dimension of the museum and typifies the artificiality of a museum-like area as a self-contained cosmos. The produced light airflow, that would not have been recognizable outside of the museum, displays the institutional hermeticism and at the same time reveals the vulnerability of a museum and its fear of disturbance. In the floating state between exhibited object and museum inventory, the ventilators adresses the shift of meaning of the ethnographical exhibit from lived objects to petrified representatives inside the museum collection.
